Title

Exploring the movie Kumbalangi Nights as a grand narrative that challenges the conventional ideas of patriarchy and family structures .

Abstract

This paper explores the (2019) Malayalam movie " Kumbalangi Nights " as a grand narrative that challenges the conventional ideas of patriarchy and family structures that prevails in Indian society. The story opens with the struggles faced by the four brothers from a dysfunctional household. The movie challenges traditional ideals of toxic masculinity and patriarchy presenting a completely different vision of family and gender roles. The film portrays Shammi, the antagonist, as a symbol of toxicity. He believes that his violent and dominating behaviour defines his identity and manhood. In contrast, Bobby, the protagonist, is depicted as a troubled character experiencing emotional isolation. His brothers, too, are shown as characters grappling with emotional distress. Their journey from repressing emotions to finally mutual understanding showcases a significant shift from acceptance of emotions and breaking the stereotypes. The female character, Baby, is a strong figure that resists patriarchal control, standing up for her rights and uses her voice against traditional gender roles. Her resistance emphasises the empowerment of women. The film challenges the ideals by showing how emotional vulnerability and compassion can result in healing and better human relationships. The transformation of the brothers represents the central theme of redefining masculinity This conveys that " manhood " is not defined by conventional gender beliefs but by emotional openness, compassion and mutual support. Kumbalangi Nights offers a portrayal of the positive transformation of family and gender roles, advocating for gender equality and emotional healing Ultimately, Kumbalangi Mights conveys that true strength lies in emotional openness, respect, and equality, making it an important narrative on the ongoing discourse around gender and family roles in the society.
