Diabetes mellitus (DM), a chronic metabolic disorder with increasing prevalence worldwide, particularly in South Asia, is characterized by high blood glucose levels due to inadequate insulin production or action. Traditional Indian herbal medicines offer valuable complementary therapies in managing DM due to their low cost, accessibility, and fewer side effects compared to conventional pharmacotherapy. Various plants, including bitter gourd (Momordica charantia), palmyrah palm (Borassus flabellifer), American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium), Gymnema sylvestre, and Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis), have shown promising anti-diabetic properties. These plants possess bioactive compounds that can lower blood glucose levels, improve insulin sensitivity, reduce oxidative stress, and combat DM-related complications. Bitter gourd, for instance, contains charantin and momordicoside, known to enhance glucose uptake. Gymnema sylvestre reduces sugar absorption, while Amla is rich in antioxidants, promoting glucose regulation. Such phytomedicines highlight the potential of integrating herbal therapies into DM treatment, warranting further research to establish standardized formulations and dosages.
