Title

Impact of Principals' Emotional Intelligence on Faculty Job Satisfaction in B.Ed Colleges

Abstract

Background: Emotional intelligence has emerged as a pivotal element of effective leadership, particularly in educational contexts where principals play a crucial role in shaping the work environment for faculty. In B.Ed colleges, principals' emotional intelligence has the potential to influence faculty job satisfaction and institutional culture significantly. Objectives: This study aimed to (1) evaluate the emotional intelligence levels of principals in B.Ed colleges in West Bengal, (2) assess faculty job satisfaction, (3) explore the relationship between principals’ emotional intelligence and faculty job satisfaction, and (4) examine the mediating role of organizational environment in this relationship. Methods: The study employed a descriptive-correlational research design with a sample comprising 24 principals and 188 faculty members from B.Ed colleges in West Bengal. Emotional intelligence was assessed using the Emotional Intelligence Scale, faculty job satisfaction was measured using the Job Satisfaction Survey, and organizational environment was evaluated through a validated Institutional Climate Scale. Data analysis included Pearson’s correlation, multiple regression, and Hayes’ mediation analysis to test the hypothesized relationships. Results: Pearson’s correlation revealed a significant positive relationship between principals’ emotional intelligence and faculty job satisfaction (r=0.62, p<0.001). Multiple regression analysis indicated that emotional intelligence accounted for 38% of the variance in faculty job satisfaction (R²=0.38). Mediation analysis demonstrated that the organizational environment partially mediated this relationship, with an indirect effect size of 0.22 (95% CI [0.12, 0.34], p<0.001). Faculty members reported higher job satisfaction when principals exhibited strong interpersonal skills and empathy, fostering a supportive organizational climate. Conclusion: The findings highlight the critical role of emotional intelligence in educational leadership, emphasizing its direct and indirect effects on faculty job satisfaction. Principals with high emotional intelligence positively influence organizational environments, leading to improved faculty morale and institutional outcomes. This study underscores the need for integrating emotional intelligence training into leadership development programs for educators. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to assess the sustained impact of emotionally intelligent leadership in educational settings.
