Title

From Benightedness to Sightedness: An Ecological Comparative study of Amitav Ghosh's The Living Mountain and T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land

Abstract

Abstract The entire world is facing today the great environmental crisis. After thousands of years of exploiting the Nature man has become aware of its consequences. Ecological imbalance all over the world has created a serious concern for social activists, administrators, scientists and environmentalists. Now there is growing awareness for preservation of ecological equilibrium. The modern man is isolated from the Nature in cities. Ecology is an interconnection between humans and nature. Ecocriticism is a way of analyzing the relation between literature and ecology. Mankind is facing a great challenge how to survive and lead a better life with the Nature. Deforestation has caused scarcity of food, fodder and fuel system as well as destroyed the habitats of tribals, birds, reptiles and wild animals. The rapid industrialization has polluted the atmosphere of the Earth. The climate of the globe is undergoing a rapid change on account of deforestation. The Jungle Literature records the writers’ observations about interaction between the wild life and its environment. India displays broadly the use of the first ecological study approach. It records the writers observations about interaction between the wild life and its environment. Degeneration of human civilization has become a matter of big concern. It stands as a sublime reflection due to ecological imbalance. The bareness of land throws light on hopelessness of human beings caused by Mother Nature.. T.S. Eliot's poem The Waste Land highlights the extreme heed for ecological awareness. Eliot showcases his ecological concerns to portray the relationship between human and nature. Amitav Ghosh’s The Living Mountain: A Fable of Our Times (2022) is an allegory. The book says regarding environmental degradation and the annihilation of indigenous ecological knowledge. This paper is set to focus on the ecologically imbalanced Sunderbans and spiritually chaotic wasteland which are the significant events in view of degradation of society and over ambitious.
