Title

MOTHER TONGUE AND MULTILINGUALISM IN PRIMARY EDUCATION

Abstract

Mother tongue and multilingual education play a vital role in primary education by fostering linguistic proficiency, cognitive development, and cultural identity. Teaching in the mother tongue provides a strong foundation for literacy and learning, while multilingual education broadens communication skills and enhances cross-cultural understanding. Approaches like Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) start with the mother tongue before introducing additional languages, improving academic performance and language acquisition. Despite its benefits, challenges like resource limitations, teacher training gaps, and social stigmas persist. Addressing these issues requires inclusive policies, community involvement, and innovative strategies like technology integration. By promoting linguistic diversity and cultural preservation, mother tongue and multilingual education ensure more equitable and effective learning outcomes, preparing students for a globalized world.
