Title

“A STUDY TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SELF INSTRUCTIONAL MODULES ON KNOWLEDGE REGARDING MODERN CONTRACEPTIVE METHOD AMONG WOMEN AT SELECTED URBAN AREA AT SIDDHPUR TALUKA.”

Abstract

Contraceptive services have been identified as an important tool for the reduction of maternal deaths, which calls for the implementation of strategies to improve the use of contraceptives. The use of modern contraceptives enables individuals and couples to plan their families, including the number of children they desire to have, and how to appropriately space and time their births. Short acting reversible contraceptives (SARCs) SARCs are contraceptive methods that are user dependent and need to be taken daily, weekly or 1 to 3 monthly. They include oral contraceptives, condoms and injectable contraceptives. Oral contraceptives (pill): The pills are available in two forms: the progestin-only pill (POP) and the combined oral contraceptive (COC) pill containing both estrogen and progestogen hormones which can be used in cyclic or extended long cycle regimens. The mechanism of action of mid-dosed POPs and COC is mainly through preventing ovulation with additional effects on cervical mucus. The low dose POPs act mainly on the cervical mucus to prevent sperm transport and function. COCs and mid dosed POPs are among the most effective contraceptive with high effectiveness of over 99% if correctly and consistently used. Male and female condoms: These are barrier methods of contraception that prevent fertilization. If used correctly and consistently the male condom offers 98% effectiveness while the female condom offers 90% effectiveness in preventing pregnancy. However the typical PI is much higher. DESIGN: pre experimental one group pre-test, post test design. PARTICIPANTS: 100, non probability convenient sampling techniques. INTERVENTION: Self instructional module. TOOL: self structure knowledge questionnaire will prepare. RESULT: in this study overall the highest percentage in the demographic data including the age group 44% (26-35), religion 79% (Hindu), marital status 65% (married), family type 61% (joint), education status 57% (primary), occupation 85% (other), place of living 96% (urban), previous knowledge regarding modern contraceptive method 73% (yes), source of information 45% (newspaper). Out of 100 pre-test samples poor knowledge is 51%, adequate is 44% and good is 5%. Post-test data in that the poor knowledge is 17%, adequate is 56 % and good is 27%. The pre-test knowledge means score is 10.5 and standard deviation is 2.03. Post test mean score is 14.2 and standard deviation 3.28. The ‘T’ test calculated value is 16.47 and table ‘T’ testable value is 1.98 which is significant at 0.05 levels. Thus it rejects the null hypothesis and accepts the researchhypothesis. Overall pretest knowledge is 42%. In the post test overall knowledge is 56.8%. The mean difference percentage or the effectiveness of intervention in knowledge is 14.8%. Chi-square test to associate the level of knowledge and selected demographic variable. CONCLUSION: the finding of the study revealed that the self instructional module is effective in increasing the knowledge.
