ZORA NEALE HURSTON’S “THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING FOR GOD”: THE STORY OF A WOMAN’S QUEST FOR FULFILLMENT AND LIBERATION

Abstract

Women’s Quest for Fulfillment and Liberation has been identified through aegis of the literary writings of women writers all over the world. It began a century ago, however it has been clearly visualized from the 20th century onwards. Women are victimized irrespective of their education and profession. Usually, women are portrayed as the supporters to the fathers, husbands and sons at families and to bosses at work place in the perspective of the male writers. This paper aims to examine the role of women in African- American Literature through the women’s point of view, particularly through a novel Their Eyes Were Watching for God by Zora Neale Hurston, the twentieth century women writer of African-American literature. Like most of the African-American writers, she placed before a complacent world, the injustices meted out to women of her race, who faced the double jeopardy of being born black women in White America. This paper is focused on a woman’s quest for fulfillment and liberation, who has been oppressed by sexism, racism and classism through the protagonist of Their Eyes Were Watching for God. In this novel, Hurston not only glorified the beauty of black colour but also showed that they are proud of their black identity.
