These challenges have prompted lawmakers to push for stricter regulations to mitigate potential harms. Balancing the benefits of social media—such as democratic discourse and self-expression—against its risks remains a significant challenge, particularly due to the lack of uniform global regulations. As policymakers navigate the complexities of social media governance, they increasingly rely on scientific research to inform their strategies.
