Title

PROSPECTIVE STUDY ON ISCHEMIC STROKE IN TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

Abstract

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the clinical characteristics, fall risk, comorbidities, therapeutic approaches, and healthcare infrastructure related to ischemic stroke patients admitted to KGH in Visakhapatnam. Materials and Methods: This observational study included 290 ischemic stroke patients (211 males, 79 females) with a mean age of 58 years. Patients were enrolled from the general medicine department, and data were collected prospectively using standardized proformas and semi-structured interviews. Clinical data, comorbidities, stroke severity, therapeutic interventions, and healthcare infrastructure were assessed over a 6-month period. Results: The most common symptoms were weakness (49%), speech disturbances (46%), and loss of consciousness (34%). Hypertension was the most prevalent comorbidity (58%), followed by diabetes mellitus (24%). The majority of patients had right-sided brain infarcts (51%), with hemiplegia (58%) being the most frequent disability. Antihypertensive medications were prescribed to 79% of patients. Significant gaps were found in healthcare infrastructure. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of addressing gaps in healthcare infrastructure, improving comorbidity management, and enhancing medication adherence to reduce stroke-related morbidity and mortality. Stroke care could be significantly improved by implementing better stroke protocols, providing necessary diagnostic tools, and addressing financial barriers to care.
