Rasna, an essential medicinal plant in Ayurveda, has been embroiled in controversy due to its ambiguous botanical identity. The lack of standardized nomenclature, coupled with variations in traditional knowledge and the substitution of raw materials, has led to confusion regarding its authentic source. This uncertainty is exacerbated by the reliance on vernacular names, errors in classical manuscripts, and the decline of traditional teaching methods. Despite the Ayurvedic Formulary of India identifying Pluchea lanceolata as the genuine source of Rasna, various substitutes, including Alpinia galanga and Vanda tessellata and more are used in different regions. Addressing this controversy requires integrated research to validate the pharmacological efficacy of proposed sources and establish a standardized identity for Rasna in Ayurveda, ensuring reliability and trust in herbal medicines.
