Title

A STUDY TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF AUTOGENIC TRAINING IN REDUCING INSOMNIA AMONG OLDER ADULTS IN SELECTED OLD AGE HOMES, ERODE.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Insomniareferstodifficultywithinitiationormaintenanceofsleep, wakingup too early, and nonrestorative sleep. Insomnia may signal and underlying physical or psychological disorder. Autogenic Training aims to get people relax and that can help in reducing insomnia and make people sleep better. This study is aimed to assess the effectiveness of Autogenic Training in reducing insomnia among older adults in selected old age homes, Erode. The study adopted an evaluative approach and non- randomized control group design.Non-probability sampling technique was used to select the 30 samples in each old age home and pre-test score assessed by modified Pittsburgh Sleep QualityIndex scale. After that, Autogenic Training was practiced for a month with older adults in experimental group. Then the level of insomnia among older adults were analysed by paired „t‟ test and unpaired „t‟ test. In experimental group, pre-test mean and standard deviation are 10.6 and 2.44 respectively. In the post-test, after Autogenic Training, the mean and standard deviation are 8 and 2.5 respectively.Thecalculatedvalueof„t‟(12.4)isgreaterthanthetabulatedvalueof„t‟ at 0.05 level of significance. In control group, pre-test mean and standard deviationare 11.2 and 2.26 respectively. In the post-test, with no intervention, the mean and standard deviation are 11.3 and 2 respectively. The calculated value of „t‟ (0.83) is lesser than the tabulated value of „t‟ at 0.05 level of significance. In the post-test of experimental group, the mean and standard deviation are 8 and 2.5 respectively. In the post-test of control group, the mean and standarddeviation are 11.3 and 2 respectively. The calculated value of „t‟ (5.6) is greater than thetabulatedvalue of„t‟ at0.05levelofsignificance.Chi-squarewasused tofindthe association between post-test insomnia scores of older adults and their demographic variables. The results shows that there is a significant association between post-test and age (χ2=10.67), education (χ2=7.9), and participation of daily activity in old age home (χ2 = 8.43). The above findings revealed that, Autogenic Training was effective to reduce the level of insomnia among older adults.
