Title

Exploring Feminine Spirituality and the Feminist Perspective in Paulo Coelho's Brida

Abstract

Abstract Paulo Coelho draws inspiration for his characters from the experiences of people he meets or hears about during his travels. A passionate traveler, he has a deep love for pilgrimages, especially to his favorite holy sites. Women hold prominent roles in Coelho's novels, depicted as strong, sharp, and vividly portrayed individuals. His female characters navigate life on their own terms, pursuing freedom in ways that resonate with their hearts and desires. The protagonists of Paulo Coelho's novels, such as Brida, Eleven Minutes, Veronika Decides to Die, By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept, and The Witch of Portobello, are women who embark on journeys of self-discovery through diverse experiences, including time in mental institutions, international prostitution, and spiritual awakenings. Coelho has mentioned that these characters are influenced by his personal life and reflect aspects of his feminine alter ego. Brida is a compelling exploration of a woman's journey into the world of sorcery and mystical traditions. Through Brida’s quest for knowledge, the novel presents profound spiritual insights while examining themes such as the Great Mother, pagan religions, and the multifaceted nature of love. Coelho integrates elements like the "Dark Night" experience, tarot card studies, transcendentalism, the Tradition of the Moon, the search for a soulmate, and the unrhythmic dance that unveils hidden mysteries. These aspects contribute to the novel’s rich tapestry of esoteric wisdom and personal transformation.
