Title

Role of Aahar (Diet) and Vihar (Lifestyle) in Preventing Ano-Rectal Diseases - A Review Article

Abstract

Ayurveda has a concept on Trayopstambha (three pillars) which includes Aahar (food), Nidra (sleep) & Bramhacharya (maintaining celibacy). Among these three; Food is placed in first position as life cannot be sustained without food. Food is responsible for maintaining our health. If used properly and following the rules, it will be responsible for our good health; whereas if code and conduct regarding food is not followed it can lead to disease also. Etiology of all diseases is collection of toxic (excretory) product in the body. Which happen due to faulty diet and change in lifestyle. For healthy body we have to need balanced healthy Diet, balanced physical activity and balanced Sleep. Ano-rectal disorders are a group of medical disorders that occur at rectum and anal canal region. Ancient wisdom of Ayurveda have mentioned various references in many Ayurvedic texts regarding Anorectal diseases and their management after a long clinical experience as Arsha (Haemorrhoids), Bhagandara (fistula-in-ano) etc. The incidence of problem is increasing & challenging due to continue practice of Ahit-sevan (harmful substances), ignorance and busy lifestyle. Here, we are discussing about most common and immerging diseases of Ano-rectal region. The commonest etiopathogenesis of these diseases is Constipation, which is risk factor for metabolic diseases. Ayurveda deals with both prevention and management of Ano-rectal diseases. Preventive aspect explained under headings of Dincharya, Ritucharya, Dasaharavidhi-visheshayatana, Aaharopyogi-varg, Sadavrita and Nidra. Primary principal treatment of disease in Ayurveda is, to correct and ignite our Agni (Digestive fire) along with detoxification of body. This will maintain our normal metabolic activity and makes us healthy. The primary aim of this article is to collect the various preventive measures of Ayurveda. Most of the times; elimination of a single known essential cause (Food/Lifestyle) may be sufficient to hinder the disease.
