The cooperative sector in India is gaining recognition for its ability to alleviate the negative impacts of globalisation, especially in rural and economically disadvantaged areas. The public sector is experiencing inefficiencies, and privatisation has mostly failed to reach rural areas; thus, the cooperative model is a potential alternative for inclusive development. The Government of India has reaffirmed its dedication to enhancing this sector, acknowledging its intrinsic benefits in tackling essential challenges such as poverty reduction, food security, and job creation. This article examines the obstacles and opportunities for expansion in the cooperative sector in India, utilising insights from secondary data sources. The investigation identifies several enduring concerns, including insufficient infrastructure, excessive governmental intervention, mismanagement, restricted outreach, and operational deficiencies. The report advocates for essential interventions include the establishment of multipurpose cooperative societies, enhancement of capacity through education and training, professional management, growth of the cooperative movement, and ongoing research and monitoring. These steps are crucial to realise the complete potential of the cooperative sector as a catalyst for sustainable and equitable development.
