Title

Comparative Study of Web Structure Mining Models in Web Mining

Abstract

This paper presents an in-depth examination of three foundational web ranking algorithms that have shaped modern search engine technology: PageRank, HITS (Hyperlink-Induced Topic Search), SALSA (Stochastic Approach for Link-Structure Analysis) and SimRank. Through detailed theoretical analysis, computational experiments, and real-world case studies, we evaluate each algorithm's approach to interpreting the web's link structure, their mathematical foundations, practical implementations, and relative strengths in different information retrieval scenarios. Our research demonstrates that while PageRank established the paradigm of link-based ranking, HITS introduced valuable concepts of topical authority, and Weighted PageRank advanced the field by incorporating link quality metrics. We further explore how contemporary search systems have evolved beyond these foundational models by integrating machine learning and user behaviour analysis while still retaining core principles from these pioneering algorithms. The paper concludes with recommendations for future hybrid approaches that could combine the strengths of each method while addressing their individual limitations.
