Plants are fundamental resources providing a viable and renewable base for life. India, rich in medicinal plant biodiversity, necessitates the taxonomic categorization of these plants for better understanding. Taxonomic markers, which include morphological, anatomical, cytological, ecological, and genetic characters, aid in plant classification. Among these, chemical constituents also serve as markers, forming the basis of chemotaxonomy, a comparatively newer approach that significantly contributes to identifying and quantifying specific classes of natural compounds. Secondary metabolites, which include alkaloids, phenolics, and terpenoids, are pivotal in chemotaxonomy. These compounds, though not essential for primary functions like growth and metabolism, play crucial roles in human health. While chemotaxonomy aids in classification, therapeutic exploration, and commercial viability of medicinal plants, it has limitations, such as variations in chemical constitution due to environmental factors. Nevertheless, chemotaxonomic markers remain invaluable for identifying potential medicinal plant sources, ensuring the consistency of herbal medicines, and preserving plant diversity.
