Title

ENHANCEMENT OF BODY COLOUR OF ORNAMENTAL FISH KOI CARP CYPRINUS CARPIO VAR.KOI INCORPORATED WITH CLITORIA TERNATEA FLOWER EXTRACT IN THE FEED

Abstract

The Blue butterfly pea Clitoria ternatea flower is collected from The Gandhigram Rural Institute-Deemed to be University campus, Tamil Nadu, India, dried for 15 days and powdered. The extraction of powdered Clitoria ternatea flower was done using Soxhlet method. Anthocyanin from the crude extract of Clitoria ternatea was characterized and purified using the column chromatography technique. Purified anthocyanin was confirmed using Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy technique. Different quantities of anthocyanin compounds such as 0,0.05,0.1,0.15 and 0.2g were incorporated in fish meal, groundnut oil cake, wheat flour and tapioca flour for feed I(control), II, III, IV and V. Growth of Koi carp was estimated and colour enhancement of fish was observed after 21 days. The UV-visible adsorption demonstrates the carotenoid content of fish and measured in wavelengths of 380,450,475 and 500nm and exhibits a strong peak at 450nm. Growth of Cyprinus carpio var. koi was higher in feed V and lower in feed I (Control). From the results, it is concluded that the growth and colour enhancement are higher in feed V.
