The indigenization of India's defence sector is a strategic initiative aimed at achieving self-reliance in defence production and reducing dependency on imports. It aligns with the broader objectives of national security, economic growth, and technological advancement. This movement has gained momentum through government policies like the Make in India initiative, Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP), and the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP), which promote local manufacturing and private sector participation. Key reforms include the establishment of defence corridors, liberalized foreign direct investment (FDI) norms, and encouragement of public-private partnerships. India has also emphasized research and development (R&D) through organizations like the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), while fostering collaboration with startups and MSMEs in defence innovation. Indigenization of the defence sector not only strengthens India's strategic autonomy but also bolsters its position as a global defence exporter, contributing to economic and geopolitical stability.
