Title

EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PLANNED TEACHING PROGRAM ON KNOWLEDGE REGARDING HOME REMEDIES OF DYSMENORRHEA AMONG ADOLESCENT GIRLS AT SELECTED SCHOOL, KOLAR

Abstract

Dysmenorrhea, a prevalent gynaecological issue affecting 50% to 90% of adolescent girls and women in their reproductive years, significantly impacts school attendance, academic performance, and social activities. It is primarily managed through nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), but excessive reliance on these medications may cause side effects. Home remedies, including heat therapy, dietary modifications, yoga, and herbal treatments, offer safe and effective alternatives for managing menstrual pain. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a planned teaching program on adolescent girls' knowledge regarding home remedies for dysmenorrhea. A quasi-experimental, non-randomized control group design was used, involving 60 adolescent girls (30 experimental and 30 control group participants) from Government Girls' High School, Kolar, Karnataka. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire covering socio-demographic details and knowledge on home remedies for dysmenorrhea. Pretest and post test knowledge scores were compared to assess the impact of the program. Results indicated that 96.7% of participants in the experimental group had inadequate knowledge before the program, while 83.3% showed adequate knowledge post-intervention. In the control group, 100% had inadequate knowledge at baseline, with only 10% demonstrating moderate knowledge after the study. A statistically significant improvement was found in the experimental group (t = 17.382, p < 0.05). Additionally, pretest knowledge scores were significantly associated with age and family income. These findings suggest that a planned teaching program effectively enhances knowledge of home remedies for dysmenorrhea among adolescent girls, providing a valuable approach for menstrual health education in schools.
