Title

Harnessing Bacillus Subtilis As a Probiotic In Fish Culture

Abstract

The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of the bacterium Bacillus subtilis as a feed supplement for Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia). The fish were acclimated to laboratory conditions for one week prior to the experiment. The fish were divided into four groups, each consisting of six individuals, and all experiments were conducted in triplicate. Three experimental diets were prepared, each containing varying concentrations (5%, 10%, and 15%) of the probiotic bacteria. One group was maintained as the control, while the other three groups received feed supplemented with Bacillus subtilis (1 x 10^6 CFU per 10 g gel/kg of feed, with 50 g, 100 g, and 150 g of gel added per kg of feed to achieve the 5%, 10%, and 15% concentrations, respectively). After feeding the fish with the probiotic-supplemented diet, various parameters were assessed, including the antagonist properties of the bacteria, growth performance, and hemolymph indicators such as total hemocyte count, glucose levels, protein levels, and triglyceride concentrations. Additionally, water quality was monitored to assess the potential of Bacillus subtilis as a probiotic.
