Title

Exploring Kulattha Yusha as an Effective Dietary Intervention in Hypothyroidism: A Critical Review

Abstract

The thyroid gland is a vital endocrine organ that plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism. Hypothyroidism is a prevalent endocrine disorder characterized by insufficient production of thyroid hormones, leading to a hypo-metabolic state that affects basal metabolic rate, and physical and mental growth. The condition has a significant global impact, with India alone having an estimated 40 million individuals affected, and a prevalence rate of around 11%, with females being more commonly affected (6:1 ratio). Ayurveda recognizes that the body's functions are governed by the normal functioning of Agni “Rogaha sarve api mandagnou”. And hypothyroidism is similar to the lakshana of Agnimandya and Rasa Dhusti, leading to disturbances in Jataragni and Dhatwagni. These imbalances result in increased Kapha and Vata Doshas and decreased Pitta Dosha. Improper dietary habits, coupled with iodine deficiency, are major contributing factors to hypothyroidism. Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of Pathyahara Sevana (proper diet) to maintain metabolic balance and support thyroid health. Diet plays a pivotal role in regulating Agni and balancing the three Doshas. Ayurvedic treatment for hypothyroidism focuses on the principles of Agnideepana, Kaphavatahara, and Pittakara. Kulatta Yusha, known for its properties of Kaphavatahara, Medhoghna, Agnideepana, and Vibandhahara, serves as an effective remedy for supporting thyroid function and restoring balance. This paper explores the effect of Kulattha Yusha as Pathya (Dietary intervention) in the management of hypothyroidism.
