The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is India’s rural employment guarantee programme that provides 100 days of work to each household and mandates payment of wages within 15 days of completion of work. Ever since the scheme was implemented, the number of jobs has increased by 240% in the past 10 years. The scheme has been successful in enhancing economic empowerment in rural India and helping overcome the exploitation of labour. The scheme has also diminished wage volatility and the gender pay gap in labour. This can be substantiated by the following data available at the official site of MGNREGA. The state of Tamil Nadu (11.86) occupied first place in percentage of households benefited under MGNREGS in India. Individual category works are more in the state of Maharashtra 28,46,809 (13.28%) followed by Karnataka 22,07,802 (10.30%), Jharkhand 19,95,576 (9.31%), Uttar Pradesh 17,21,802 (8.03%) and Odisha 13,97,191 (6.52%) are top five states in this category.
