Title

A STUDY TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF BLENDED LEARNING ON KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REGARDING CARE OF CENTRAL LINE AMONG NURSING STUDENTS FROM SELECTED COLLEGE OF NURSING, BANGALORE.

Abstract

Critically ill patients require continuous assessment of their vital organs, including the cardiovascular system, to diagnose and manage their complex medical condition. This is` most commonly achieved by means of direct pressure monitoring systems such as central venous catheters, pulmonary artery catheters, and intra-arterial blood pressure monitoring. These catheters have multiple functions, like monitoring the pressure on the right side of the heart, administering intravenous fluids, medications, and nutrients. The major risks of insertion in the central line are infection and occlusion of the catheter. A study suggests that some local or systemic infection occurs in between 1 and 14% of patients with a central venous catheter. Infection is the most frequent complication related to central venous catheters and usually occurs when microorganisms on the patient’s skin or health care provider’s hands migrate down the catheter tract or through its hubs and subsequently colonize the catheter. Infections are usually caused by bacteria, and fungal infections are also common in immune-suppressed patients. The effects of such infections include increased morbidity and mortality, discontinuation of central venous therapy, extra costs in antibiotic delivery, and prolonged hospitalization. Nursing care and management of these central lines is complex, and many controversial practice issues challenge nursing practitioners.
