Title

Presentation and Outcome of Thoracic Injuries in Rural Setup at DVVP Pravara Rural Hospital, Loni

Abstract

Title: Presentation and Outcome of Thoracic Injuries in Rural Setup at DVVP Pravara Rural Hospital, Loni Introduction: Thoracic trauma is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. While most thoracic injuries can be managed with simple bedside interventions, only a small percentage require major surgical intervention. Aim and Objectives: The aim was to study the clinical profile and management of chest trauma cases at DVVP Pravara Rural Hospital, Loni. The objectives included evaluating the clinical profile of patients and the various treatment modalities used. Materials and Methods: This retrospective observational study included all chest trauma patients admitted to DVVP Pravara Rural Hospital from July 2024 to December 2024. A total of 64 patients were evaluated through primary and secondary surveys, radiological investigations, biochemical parameters, and emergency procedures. Results: Majority of patients were male (95%). Most patients belonged to the age group of 50-60 years. Blunt trauma was the predominant mechanism of injury (97%). Road traffic accidents were the most common cause of injury (80%). Hemothorax was the most common type of injury (21%). Most patients were managed conservatively, with tube thoracostomy being the main surgical intervention (32%). Discussion: The study found that road traffic accidents were the leading cause of thoracic injuries, and most injuries were managed without major surgery. Comparison with other studies showed variations in age distribution, male-to-female ratio, and treatment modalities. Conclusion: Effective management of chest injuries is possible with careful assessment, simple emergency procedures, and adherence to traffic rules to prevent such injuries. General surgeons usually manage chest trauma, with thoracic surgeons rarely involved.
