Title

FRESHWATER FISH AS A DIETARY PROTEIN SOURCE: A COMPARATIVE STUDY FROM VARALDEVI LAKE, BHIWANDI

Abstract

Abstract : This study evaluates the protein content of four commercially important fish species- Catla catla, Cirrhinus mrigala, Labeo rohita, and Oreochromis mossambicus, found in Varaldevi Lake, Bhiwandi, Maharashtra, India. Protein analysis was conducted by Lowry's method, the result revealed a significance interspecies divergence: Labeo rohita exhibited the maximum protein content of 18.27 ± 0.74 g/100 g, followed by Oreochromis mossambicus 14.84 ± 0.64 g/100 g, Cirrhinus mrigala 13.86 ± 0.68 g/100 g and Catla 7.07 ± 0.24 g/100 g. The observed variations highlight the impact of environmental factors, sampling conditions and regional ecological conditions on protein content. This work highlights the potential use of these fish species as a source of dietary protein and suggests additional research at the regional level for sustainable fishery management and public health nutrition.
