Title

SIGNIFICANCE OF LANGHANA IN THE MANAGEMENT OF HYPOTHYROIDISM: AN OVERVIEW

Abstract

Introduction: Hypothyroidism is a deficiency in thyroid hormone production, impacting cellular metabolism and potentially any organ system. There is a growing interest in interpreting it through Ayurveda and applying its principles for treatment. Analysis of classical texts reveals that hypothyroidism involves vitiation of Jatharagni, Dhatwagni, and Rasavaha Srotas, which nourish the body. Such disturbances result in Rasa Pradoshaja Vikara (manifestation of diseases due to vitiation of Rasavaha Srotas). Ayurveda suggests Langhana as a therapeutic reduction and feeling of lightness in the body that can be personalized to individual needs based on Dosha, Agni, Rogi, and Roga Bala. Aim: The present paper is aimed at understanding the role of Langhana in the treatment of hypothyroidism. Materials and methods: Various classical texts of Ayurveda, commentaries, published research papers, PubMed, Google Scholar, Research Gate, and articles available on the Internet and other sources were reviewed in this paper. Discussion: Hypothyroidism, a prevalent endocrine disorder worldwide, aligns with the Ayurvedic concept of Rasa Pradoshaja Vikara based on its clinical manifestations. As hypothyroidism becomes an increasing health issue globally, the Ayurvedic practice of Langhana may offer benefits in mitigating its impact. Langhana is recognized for its therapeutic advantages and is employed in the management of metabolic disorders. Conclusion: Depending on the condition, more and more vital options of Langhana are used in patients. Due to Ruksha, Sukshma, and Tikshna Guna, Langhana leads to Laghuta in the body. So, as a part of treatment, Langhana can be prescribed to patients with hypothyroidism according to the severity of the disease.
