Semi classical music came into existence, when the singing styles of folk music were recognized with classical status. If we go through the traditions of Hindustani music, then we come to realize that both classical music and semi classical music have their own significance. Both of these forms of music have been developed and modified in course of time. By going through the history, we come to know that the semi-classical music has mainly evolved in the form of "Thumri" and "Tappa" "Thumri' is basically a dance specific music. The word "Thumri' has beenderived from the 'Braj-Bhasa' (Braj language prevalent in the Northern India'. The word "Thumri' is made of two words, "Thoom' means to dance naturally and the word 'Ri' means to entertain."Thumri" is related to dance act "Thumri' in order develop as an art of music, has undergone several modifications in the past. By going through the history of "Thumri' we come to know that the singing of Thumri' is mostly done for sake of entertainment. In the ancient days some women of a particular community of India used to perform dance form of acting along with songs. In the Indian Hindu Mythological period there were 'Apsara' (beautiful lady dancers of the heaven as per the mythology) who used to entertain the 'Devta' the Hindu deities, through their song and dance performance.
