Title

Design and Development of a Battery Management System

Abstract

The increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has underscored the need for more efficient and intelligent Battery Management Systems (BMS) to ensure optimal battery performance and longevity. This paper presents a comprehensive design and development of a BMS that integrates smart charging and thermal management to enhance the performance of lithium-ion battery packs in EVs. The proposed system monitors key battery parameters such as the State of Charge (SOC), State of Health (SOH), temperature, and charging cycles. An Arduino Uno microcontroller is employed as the central control unit, supported by relays, sensors, and an LCD display for real-time monitoring. The smart charging mechanism dynamically switches between fast and normal charging modes depending on the battery's condition and temperature. Moreover, a thermal management system featuring a Peltier cooling module, water block, CPU fan, and copper pipes is integrated to prevent overheating. The experimental results indicate improvements in charging efficiency and thermal regulation, thereby extending battery life and enhancing overall system safety.
