Title

Hiking & Trekking tourism-motivations and behaviours- A case Study

Abstract

This study examines the hiking and trekking behaviors of participants in the Sahyadri Hills, part of the Western Ghats in India. Through a survey of 120 hiking club members, the study highlights that most hikers are young adults (16-30 years old), working primarily in corporate or educational sectors. Socializing with friends is the main reason for hiking, while historical and architectural interests, along with nature appreciation, drive their motivations. The research also reveals that hikers prioritize natural beauty, safety, and cultural heritage over cost when selecting destinations. Many participants show a strong commitment to environmental conservation, particularly at historical sites like forts, and adopt a holistic approach to protecting nature. Historical significance, especially related to forts from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's reign, is a major draw for hikers. Overall, the study suggests that the Sahyadri hiking community consists of young, working-age individuals with a deep appreciation for history, nature, and sustainable tourism. These findings can inform strategies to promote sustainable tourism and conservation in the region.
