Different business models are being implemented in e-commerce for the delivery of products and services leveraging the latest advances in Internet technologies. These models are extremely useful for the provision of Quality of Service (QoS) matching between the supply and demand sides in multiple corporate sectors. Currently aggregation models are gaining in prominence compared to the traditional disintermediation models. Aggregation models bring together disaggregated providers or suppliers and customers on a common platform and intermediate between the two. However, most of the successful implementations of the aggregation model such as Uber and Airbnb involve a simple supply chain on the provider side often involving only a single link between the platform and the provider. This article discusses the concept of Aggregation model and its deployment in complex supply-chain scenarios. It analyzes the conditions where the Aggregation is most applicable, the players involved, complexity of the supply chain in context, and discusses approaches to implement aggregation in a scenario with a complex supply chain. The Indian Pharmaceutical retail business is used as a case study.
