Title

Conflict between Tradition and Modernity in R K Narayan’s The Vendorof Sweets

Authors

Abstract

Traditionalists respected and wished to protect established social structures, such as gender norms and families. Modernists, on the other hand, excitedly embraced and participated in new philosophies that subverted gender conventions as well as novel ways of acting, dressing, and more. As a result, the concepts of "tradition" and "modernity" are not mutually exclusive but rather have a relationship. Although these ideas and actions do exist, they do so in a dialogic manner. Modernity is thus an economic force, but tradition is basically social and cultural. The conflict between tradition and modernity is a major element in the narrative, which is expressed by the characters' deeds. Modernity stands for fresh concepts, advancements, and changes, whereas tradition represents the age-old practices, beliefs, and traditions that have been handed down through the centuries. The Guide, a famous book by R. K. Narayan, explores the recurring issue of conflicts between tradition and modernity. When the book was released in 1958, India had already gained its independence. Along with political developments, independence also brought about social and religious transformations. The struggle between preserving cultural identity and accepting the changes brought about by contemporary society is the root of the conflicts between modernisation and traditional culture.
