Title

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PSYCHOLOGICAL VARIABLES AND PERFORMANCE OF MALE WRESTLERS IN BAGALKOT AND BELAGAVI DISTRICTS

Abstract

The present study investigates the relationship between psychological variables like sports aggression and achievement motivation-and game performance among male wrestlers in freestyle and Greco-Roman styles. A descriptive survey method was employed and 60 male wrestlers aged 18 to 25 years from different training centers in Bagalkot and Belagavi districts of Karnataka were selected, using a purposive sampling technique. The study utilized standardized psychological tests, including the Sports Aggression Inventory (Shrivatsa, Anand Kumar & Shukla, Prem Shankar, 1988) and the Achievement Motivation Test (M.L. Kamlesh, 1990), while game performance was evaluated using a self-developed rating scale assessed by coaches. Statistical analysis included the Coefficient of Correlation to examine relationships between psychological variables and game performance and an independent t-test to determine differences in performance between wrestling styles. The findings revealed a significant positive correlation between sports aggression and game performance, as well as between achievement motivation and game performance. Furthermore, freestyle wrestlers demonstrated significantly higher performance levels than Greco-Roman wrestlers, indicating potential differences in technical and tactical demands between the two styles. The study highlights the critical role of psychological attributes in wrestling performance and suggests that training programs should integrate psychological skill development to enhance overall performance.
