Title

EFFECTIVENESS OF TPACK-BASED SCIENCE TEACHING ON THE ACQUISITION OF SCIENCE PROCESS SKILLS OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK)-based science teaching on the acquisition of Science Process Skills (SPS) among secondary school students. As science education shifts towards inquiry-based and learner-centered approaches, integrating technology with pedagogy and content becomes vital for fostering critical thinking and scientific inquiry. This research adopted a quasi-experimental design involving 66 Class IX students from two secondary schools in Dharwad, Karnataka, divided into an experimental group taught using TPACK strategies and a control group taught through traditional methods. A Science Process Skills Test (SPST) was developed and administered before and after a six-week intervention. The experimental group received instruction through digitally enriched lessons using simulations, videos and inquiry-based pedagogies, while the control group followed traditional lectures. Statistical analysis using paired and independent t-tests revealed a significant improvement in science process skills (SPS) among the experimental group (t = 14.66), with no significant gains in the control group. The findings support the effectiveness of TPACK-based science teaching in enhancing students’ scientific thinking and process skills. The study offers implications for teacher training, curriculum design and classroom practices, advocating for the integration of TPACK to meet the demands of 21st-century science education.
