Title

Enhancing subgrade soil strength using fly ash for rural road

Abstract

Around 51.8 million hectares of India is covered by black cotton soil, which hardens when dry but loses strength when wet, posing construction challenges. Soil stabilization, widely used in foundations and roads, enhances mechanical properties like strength, durability, and volume stability. This is achieved by treating the soil or replacing it with better materials. Therefore in this study, it is attempted to stabilize the clayey soil obtained from Sambalpur University, Burla replacing fly ash obtained from Hindalco in Sambalpur, Odisha. The proportions of this additive are varied in different percentages like, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%, by dry weight of soil to stabilize the soil. Due to the lack of plasticity in fly ash, the plasticity index (P.I.) of the fly ash-modified clay decreases as the content of fly ash increases. When tested under soaked conditions, CBR values for clay containing the fly ash observed that the CBR of the fly ash-modified clay increased up to 40% then it decreased. Analysis of previously discovered results shows the potential of fly ash as an additive that can be used to improve the technical properties of soil.
