Title

Effectiveness of structured teaching program on knowledge of natural pain relief methods during labour among primigravida mothes

Authors

Abstract

The foundation for the whole of humankind is the art of motherhood. Mother is the greatest gift to the world. Every woman is a mother and she should be respected. Childbirth is a magnificent event with meaning far beyond the actual physiologic process. Alternative modalities focus on preventing suffering rather than completely eliminating pain. It helps the mother build self-confidence, improving her coping abilities and perceptions of childbirth. Hence the focus of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured teaching programme on Natural pain relief methods during labour among primigravida mothers attending the Antenatal Clinic at Government Hospital, Anekal, Bangalore, Karnataka. Objectives: The study aimed at assessing the knowledge of the primigravida mothers regarding natural pain relief methods during labour, evaluating the effectiveness of the structured teaching programme regarding natural pain relief methods during labour among primigravida mothers and determining the association between the pre-test knowledge scores of primigravida mothers regarding natural pain relief methods during labour with selected socio-demographic variables. Methods: A pre-experimental design and evaluative research were used in the study. The data was collected from 50 subjects in the Government Hospital, Anekal, through the Convenience sampling technique. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire. Results: The majority 58% of the primigravida mothers had inadequate knowledge and 42% had moderate knowledge in the pre-test. After administration of the structured teaching programme, 72% of the subjects had adequate knowledge, 22% had moderate knowledge and only 6% had inadequate knowledge regarding natural pain relief methods during labour in the post-test. The overall analysis of the level of knowledge of primigravida mothers regarding natural pain relief methods during labour showed that the mean knowledge scores of the subjects at pre-test were 13.56 (45.2%) with a standard deviation of 4.953 found to be inadequate knowledge regarding natural pain relief methods during labour. After the administration of the structured teaching programme mean knowledge scores of the subjects were 24.04 (80.13%) with a standard deviation of 5.631 found to be an improvement in the level of knowledge among primigravida mothers. Conclusion: The findings of the study show that there was a significant difference in pre-test and post-test levels of knowledge of primigravida mothers. From this, it is concluded that the structured teaching programme is effective in improving the level of knowledge of primigravida mothers. There was a significant association between primigravida mothers' knowledge level and selected demographic variables such as age, occupation and source of information.
