The legality of shadow libraries within the Indian copyright protection regime presents a complex legal and ethical challenge. While copyright laws aim to protect the interests of authors and publishers, the exorbitant pricing of academic resources has created accessibility barriers, leading to the proliferation of shadow libraries. This paper critically examines the legal standing of shadow libraries in India by analyzing copyright provisions, exceptions under the fair dealing doctrine, and judicial precedents. The research highlights the tension between copyright enforcement and the need for equitable access to academic resources. Comparative insights from international jurisdictions further underscore the need for a balanced approach. The study concludes by advocating for legal reforms that harmonize copyright protection with the broader public interest in knowledge dissemination.
