Title

Globalization, Fast Food and the Changing Food Habits of the Mappila Muslim Community in South Malabar

Abstract

The research paper explores the impact of globalization and fast food on the food habits of the Mappila Muslim community in South Malabar, Kerala. Through a critical analysis of primary sources and literary texts,, the researcher explores how the influx of fast food chains and globalized food systems has influenced the traditional dietary practices of the Mappila community, leading to a shift towards more middle eastern and convenience based food habits. The growth of Arabian fast food restaurants has led to the adoption of new food habits and the spread of Arabian cuisine. This phenomenon is attributed to the mass migration of Mappilas to Gulf countries and the subsequent influence of Gulf remittances. The paper examines the social and economic factors driving this change and its implications for traditional family structures and health. The introduction of Arabian dishes like Shawarma, Shawaya, Kubuz and Biriyani variants etc. has become popular in Malabar. However, not all these dishes have made their way into the Malabari kitchen.
