India is a Union of States, a multi-lingual, multi-religious, multi-cultural, large and diverse country. India is a democratic country, the worlds largest democracy. Democracy and Elections go hand-in-hand. ‘One Nation One Election’ also means ‘Simultaneous Elections’ to the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies to reduce costs, address the challenges of logistics and reduce disruptions due to frequent elections and to increase voter participation. ‘One Nation One Election’ will permit voters to cast their votes for the Lok Sabha and their State Assembly, on the same day, in the polling booth, in their constituencies. But, voting would take place in phases throughout the length and breadth of the country. It will increase administrative efficiency, reduce election expenditure, promote political stability and policy in the country. ‘One Nation One Election’ is an important election reform which needs a lot of thinking, thoughtful discussions and deliberations and a consensus. ‘One Nation One Election’ concept has its advantages and disadvantages. The Ram Nath Kovind Committee advocated the concept of ‘Simultaneous Elections’ to the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies in India.
