Title

Advancements in Membrane-Based Physio-Chemical Bio-Separation Techniques for Pharmaceutical Purification

Abstract

Abstract: The growing demand for high-purity pharmaceutical products has intensified the need for efficient bio-separation techniques. Membrane-based physio-chemical methods have emerged as promising solutions, offering precise, scalable, and cost-effective separation processes. This study explores recent advancements in membrane-based bio-separation technologies for pharmaceutical purification, focusing on innovations in membrane materials, configurations, and operational strategies. We employed techniques such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and reverse osmosis, alongside hybrid approaches combining membrane filtration with other physio-chemical methods like chromatography and adsorption. Key improvements include the development of high-performance membranes with enhanced permeability, fouling resistance, and selective separation capabilities, facilitating the isolation of bioactive compounds, proteins, and vaccines with greater efficiency. The experimental results demonstrated significant advancements in separation efficiency and product purity, especially when optimized membrane materials were combined with process modifications such as pressure-driven filtration and concentration polarization control. Our findings show that membrane-based separation methods offer a viable alternative to traditional techniques, reducing energy consumption and enhancing the sustainability of pharmaceutical purification processes. The study concludes that ongoing research into novel membrane materials and hybrid separation methods will continue to drive improvements in the purity and scalability of pharmaceutical products, with potential applications in large-scale manufacturing and bioprocessing.
