Title

STRESS MANAGEMENT

Abstract

Chronic stress is a significant concern in modern society, affecting mental and physical well-being. Increasing demands, goals, chores etc. are the leading cause of stress. As per Ayurveda the people accountable for mental diseases who are of Rajasa, Tamasa Manas Prakruti, are of Alpasatva (weak mind) and have vitiated Manovaha Srotas (channels carrying Manas), vitiated Sharirk Doshas causes imbalance in Rajo and Tamo Dosha which are also responsible for mental disease. The aim of this review article is to compile and understand various stress management methods in promoting mental health directly indirectly. Ayurveda emphasize on maintaining a balance between mind and body to stay healthy. Ayurvedic management for stress include Nidanparivarjana (eliminate the cause), Satvavajaya Chikitsa (Psycho-behavioral therapy), Daivavyapashraya Chikitsa (Divine therapy), Satvika Ahara (wholesome diet), Yoga and meditation, proper sleep, changing lifestyle, medication and Panchkarma. Changing lifestyle and including wholesome diet in routine makes the patient physically fit which ultimately leads to better mental wellbeing. A nutritious, well balanced diet has powerful stress reducing benefits that improve brain functioning, immunity, improve blood circulation in the body. Some specific nutrients play a very important role in reducing the levels of cortisol and adrenalin in the body and also the stress chemicals. They are complex carbohydrates, proteins (tryptophan, phenylalanine and tyrosine, theanine), Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Vitamin B, Melatonin, Magnesium, and Selenium.
