Title

EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION ON EFFECTIVE UTILIZATION OF POULTRY FEATHERS IN CONCRETE

Abstract

This study investigates the feasibility of incorporating waste poultry feathers into concrete to create a cost-effective, lightweight material with improved flexural strength, aligning with sustainable construction practices. To evaluate the feasibility of using waste feathers in concrete, to enhance specific properties of concrete, particularly its flexural strength, and to promote sustainability by reducing environmental impact and production costs. Involved a systematic approach that began with collecting and processing waste poultry feathers, ensuring they were clean and suitable for incorporation into concrete mixtures. Various concrete mixtures were then prepared with different percentages of feather content, specifically 1%, 2%, and amounts exceeding 2%. These mixtures underwent rigorous mechanical testing to measure their compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths at different curing periods, specifically 14, 28, and 56 days. Additionally, concrete with 2% feather content showed continued improvement in flexural strength after 56 days. However, it was observed that feather content exceeding 2% resulted in a reduction in flexural strength. Although feather-reinforced concrete exhibited lower compressive and tensile strengths compared to traditional concrete, optimizing feather content between 1-2% significantly enhanced flexural strength. This makes the material particularly suitable for impact-resistant and lightweight construction applications.
