Arms and the Man, like other comedies, does not deal with the significant issues of life. In it, there is an onslaught of romantic idealism! Arms and the Man is concerned only with the survival of old-fashioned ideals. Shaw condemns acknowledged ideas about the stereotype of a heroic stage soldier, which exists just in fiction. Thus, the purpose of a dramatist is to warn the people against such romantic illusions, which lead to disastrous wars and unhappy marriages. Romance is a form of prose fiction, distinguished from the novel or tale because it does not bind itself to verisimilitude or reality but gives scope to imagination and idealization. In this play, Shaw deals with war and love deprived of all their romantic glamour. According to him, romantic war is only full of bloodshed. He has presented the reality of war as well as love before us by eliminating the illusions. While criticizing the war, Shaw criticizes its glorification. This paper explores how Shaw dismantles traditional notions of heroism and war by exposing their unrealistic and harmful nature.
