Title

PIC CONTROLLER BASED STATIC VAR COMPENSATOR (SVC) FOR POWER FACTOR IMPROVEMENT

Abstract

In an electrical system, value of power factor depicts the system efficiency to utilize maximum of the supplied electric power in useful workout. Lower the value of power factor (PF), higher are the transmission losses. Utility grid supply also charges certain penalty amount for lower PF value. Traditional approach for power factor correction (PFC) is the use of shunt capacitor banks. In this automation era, more importance and demand is given to automated switching of capacitors. Use of micro-controllers/embedded systems, for monitoring and controlling switching of correction devices, is being widely implemented. Design of a single-phase Static VAR Compensator (SVC) based on TRIAC is proposed in this paper, with aim of compensating the reactive power and power factor correction. Monitoring and controlling of the whole design is achieved using Programmable Interface Circuit (PIC) micro-controller. Compensation of excessive reactive elements helps draw the PF near unity, wherein TRIAC plays a key role. Firing pulses of this TRIAC are determined by PIC controller. Discussion on an innovative feature of online capacitor testing without disconnecting the capacitor bank i.e. CapBank test, is also included in this proposed design.
