Title

CULTIVATION OF OYSTER MUSHROOM (PLEUROTUS OSTREATUS) USING AGRICULTURE SUBSTRATE

Abstract

Oyster mushroom is basically an edible mushroom. Oyster mushroom name originated from Latin [Pleurotus - sideways, oyster- shape of the cap] which is namely refers to the shape of the fruiting body and the sideway growth of the stem with respect of the cap. Edible Mushroom belongs to the wide range of Division –Basidiomycota and Kingdom– Fungi. Oyster Mushroom is commonly known as “Dhingri” in India. It is the 3rd largest cultivated mushroom in the World. Oyster mushroom variety is easy to grow in the farmland by using the hanging method. The aim of the study is that to cultivate oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) using the cultured spawns. The cultured spawn was taken and grow on the substrate wheat straw, by packing the substrate in form of layers and placing the spawn on the edges of the cultivation bag. These cultivated bags are hanged using ropes. The results indicated that the spawn running was completed in the bags within 10 to 14 days and pinheads appeared on the 19th – 20th days. Pinheads turned into leaf-like structure on the 23rd day and the first harvest was made at about 26 – 28 days. The second harvest is for another 4 or 5 days. In conclusion, This study confirmed that the Oyster mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus grown well in wheat straw when compared with other substrates and also it is confirmed that the spawn produced from wheat have more potential than other spawns.
