Title

A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Assertiveness Training Programme for Nursing Students

Abstract

A study conducted to assess the effectiveness of assertiveness training programme for nursing students. The objectives of the study were to assess the level of self-esteem and assertiveness among nursing students in selected college of nursing, New Delhi, to assess the effectiveness of Assertiveness Training Programme on self-esteem and assertiveness among nursing students in selected college of nursing, New Delhi. Experimental One group Pre-test Post test only research design was used to accomplish the stated objectives in the study. After obtaining the ethical clearance from the ethical committee of St. Stephen's Hospital, final study was conducted at St. Stephen’s Hospital College of Nursing, Tis Hazari, Delhi. 70 samples were selected using simple random sampling technique. The data was collected using two standardised tools that is Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale and Rathus Assertiveness Scale and Assertiveness training programme was conducted after pre-test. The data analysis was done using descriptive and inferential statistic. The pre-test study results showed that 31 (44.28%) had low self-esteem and 36 (51.42%) were very non-assertive. However, after the administration of the assertiveness training programme, majority of nursing students had normal self-esteem i.e. 43 (61.42%), and 16 (22.87%) were assertive. Mean difference of pre-test level and post test level of self-esteem of nursing students was 1.29. Mean difference of pre-test level and post level of assertiveness of nursing students was -23.78. The calculated ‘Z’ value of 3.225 was greater than the table value of 1.96 at p<0.05 level of significance. The calculated ‘Z’ value of 6.88 was greater than the table value of 1.96 at p<0.05 level of significance. Hence, the study results concluded that assertiveness training programme was effective in increasing self-esteem and assertiveness of nursing students.
