Title

A Complete and Comprehensive Review on 3D Printing in Pharmaceutical Technology

Abstract

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an innovative manufacturing process that utilizes computer-aided design (CAD) software and programming to construct three-dimensional objects through the precise layering of materials on a substrate. As an additive manufacturing technique, 3D printing builds structures by successively depositing or solidifying material layer by layer, ultimately forming complex 3D shapes. In recent years, the integration of 3D printing within the pharmaceutical industry has become increasingly advanced and versatile. The process begins by designing the medicinal product using CAD modules, configuring it into a three-dimensional model. This digital design dictates the external appearance and structure of the dosage form. The software then slices the model into multiple printable layers, which are translated into machine-readable instructions and sent to the 3D printer. This technique opens up unprecedented opportunities to optimize manufacturing systems. Unlike traditional pharmaceutical production methods, 3D printing provides distinct advantages, especially in the realm of personalized medicine. It allows for the precise fabrication of complex drug structures, customized drug release profiles, and efficient small-batch production. The current review aims to summarize the different methods, benefits, limitations, and applications of 3D printing in pharmaceutical sciences.

Key Words

three-dimensional printing, 3D printed pharmaceuticals, drug delivery systems, personalized medicine, additive manufacturing
