Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disorder of glucose metabolism and has been shown to exhibit seasonal fluctuations in incidence and management outcomes. Recent studies have focused on the potential impact of environmental ambient temperature, seasonal dietary composition, physical activity, and hormone perturbations, on glucose regulation. Comprehending this seasonal impact is vital to optimizing preventive approaches and treatment strategies, particularly in populations at higher risk, including patients with type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes. The objective of this review is to summarize the existing literature on the effects of seasonal changes on diabetes mellitus, addressing trends in HbA1c, incidence of complications and managing diabetes mellitus. Applying evidence from several epidemiological and clinical studies, we describe seasonal variation in glycemic control, its physiological basis, and outline season-sensitive strategies to improve diabetes care in various populations and geographical locations.
