Title

The lesson Zimbabwe can learn from Indian agricultural marketing policy

Authors

Abstract

Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector, which is vital to its economy, faces challenges in marketing production efficiently, particularly for smallholder farmers. India’s agricultural marketing policies offer valuable lessons to Zimbabwe. India’s National Agricultural marketing policies offer valuable lessons to Zimbabwe. This study used the STP model to evaluate the Indian and Zimbabwean agricultural marketing models. The valuable lessons learnt were India’s National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) platform that have revolutionized agricultural marketing by integrating digital systems to ensure price transparency and reduce exploitation by intermediaries. Zimbabwe could adopt similar technology to improve market access for smallholder farmers. Furthermore, India’s Farmer Producer Organization (FPOs) has enhanced collective bargaining power and market efficiency, and Zimbabwe could replicate to empower its farmers. Investment in post harvest infrastructure, as seen in India’s Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF), is another critical lesson for Zimbabwe to reduce losses and improve storage. Finally, India’s balanced approach of combining government support with market-driven mechanisms provides a road map for Zimbabwe to optimize resource allocation while fostering competitive markets. These reforms could transform Zimbabwe’s agricultural marketing landscape and improve farmers’ livelihood and national food security.
