Title

Management of Avabahuka (Frozen Shoulder) Through Ayurveda: A Comprehensive Case Study.

Abstract

Background – Avabahuka is a disease of Amsa Sandhi (shoulder joint) and it has been described under 80 types of Vata Vyadhi by Acharya Sushruta. It is a Vataja Nanatmaja Vyadhi that affects the normal functioning of the upper limbs, thereby hindering an individual's daily routine. It primarily results from the vitiation of Vyana Vata, which localizes in the Amsa Sandhi (shoulder joint). These clinical manifestations closely resemble Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis) as described in contemporary medical science. Aims and Objectives- This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of the prescribed treatment protocol in disrupting the pathogenesis of Avabahuka. Materials and Methods – A 54-year-old male patient visited our OPD with complaints of inability to lift his left shoulder, accompanied by pain while raising the left upper limb and pain in the nape of the neck for the past one week. The condition was also associated with numbness, weakness in the left shoulder, and stiffness, which significantly interfered with his daily activities. After a thorough clinical examination, the patient was diagnosed with Avabahuka. The patient was formulated with internal medications like Dhanadanayadi Kashaya, Nimba Amritadi Eranda Taila, and external procedures like Abhyanga, Swedana, Nasya, Greevavasti, Yogavasti, etc. Results – The patient experienced immediate relief following Abhyanga and Swedana, Nasya. Throughout the course of treatment, he reported a gradual reduction in shoulder and neck stiffness, along with a notable improvement in his range of motion. Discussion and Conclusion –This treatment protocol which was formulated after thorough history taking and examinations has shown positive outcome in the patient condition, helped in alleviating the disease, regain his confidence and improved his Quality of life.
