Abstract
Chandanadi taila is an Ayurvedic formulation mainly used in relieving burning sensation, dizziness etc. It is used as whole body massage oil and also applied over head due to its coolant effect which helps in
promoting sound sleep. It is mentioned in various classical texts like Yogaratnakara, Sahasrayoga, Sharangadhara samhita, Bhaishajya ratnavali, Sarvaroga chikitsaratnam etc. This has been prescribed
by many practitioners for people suffering from insomnia conditions. The main content in Chandanadi
taila is Chandana( Santalum album). Chandana is widely used as a pithahara drug in Ayurveda. Additional karmas include dahahara, vishahara, jwarahara, raktapithahara, trushnahara, klamahara, sramahara, varnya, antardahahara, ahladahara, vrshyam, hridyam and anandakara. Chandanadi taila
mentioned in Bhavaprakasha is administered internally for curing apachi. On exploring the
formulation it came to notice that almost all the ingredients possess properties which helps in bringing
down pitta to its normalcy state. Ksheera is one among the ingredient in Chandanadi taila, possessing
madhura rasa, seeta veerya, snigdha guna, helps in bringing down pitha. Tila taila has the property of
tridoshahara which again helps in bringing down the pitha dosha. On reviewing 17 references, it came
to notice that the references, that are quoted in Sahasrayoga and Sarvaroga chikitsa ratna were same
and in other references chandana, haridra, and tila taila were common ingredients. This article
compiles introduction, material and methods, references from different classical texts, views of
different composition according to different acharyas, drug review, pharmacological properties of
ingredients, discussion and conclusion.
